Our Stance on Anti-Racism Work

DBT Eastside knows Black Lives Matter.

DBT Eastside recognizes the deep impact that historical injustices have made upon all of our clients, but most especially our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) clients. We believe in the importance of saying their names and know that intersectionality influences / impacts everyone to varying degrees.

As part of our commitment to equity and, notably, anti-racism work, we continue to keep in mind that the burden to educate should not fall to our BIPOC clients. We take ownership of our efforts and acknowledge that anti-racism work goes beyond training and books. DBT Eastside’s team of therapists continue to strive to be mindful of how tradition and dogmatic adherence to structure can perpetuate systems that are anti-black or harmful to our BIPOC clients. We seek to grow and improve, and we remain committed to anti-racism and our equity work.

If you have questions about our work and how we support our BIPOC clients, please use our Contact Us page to learn more.

 Equity Statement

DBT Eastside is a collective team of therapists committed to providing evidenced-based counseling services to a diverse community of clients. As part of this commitment, our therapists aim to stay informed of and continually educated in how equity and the lack thereof influence/ impact both our clients and our work.

To ensure that the DBT Eastside team of therapists consistently cares for all of our clients and their individual needs, DBT Eastside maintains an Equity Committee that supports the full team of therapists. This committee not only provides training and resources for our therapists, but also routinely reviews and audits practices to address implicit bias, intention vs impact concerns, and heteronormative, racist, or problematic traditional frameworks.

DBT Eastside strives to welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. We acknowledge the historical lack of recognition and space given to marginalized communities.

When you select to work with DBT Eastside, you will be working with providers who are committed to:

  • The value that we are not the experts on the lives of our clients or their experiences

  • Holding our clients, as the experts on their lives, as we apply DBT and other modalities

  • Validating our clients’ experiences

  • The knowledge that each person is influenced by their unique experience and our shared systems differently

  • Approaching each person with humility, curiosity, and openness about their experiences

  • Helping clients reach the goals they set for themselves.

We encourage our clients to reach out should they have further questions about our approach and priorities.

Finally, in regard to providers, we would like our clients and professional colleagues to be aware that we believe representation matters. We know that our current team does not fully represent those in our community and those we serve. In recognition of this, we have identified where we have missed opportunities to add more diversity to our team and have adjusted our recruitment strategies to address this. If you are interested in joining our team, please visit our recruiting page for more information.
